Now we see the pressure the people of Israel are putting on Samuel. While all the surrounding tribes of that time had a king, up to this point, Israel has only ever had priests and judges. This is because God has been the true leader and the head of Israel, even if they haven't always listened to Him.
However, the priests have not always done their job as we have seen in the past with Eli's sons in Samuel Worships God. It is recorded that they were abusive and cheated the people. The Israelites see the likelihood of that happening again with Samuel's sons and won't stand for it. Their solution? Appoint a king!
I feel for Samuel. He must have felt like such a failure. All his life he's done his best to use his position and influence for good. He's fallen into the same dilemma as Eli. And now the whole country is counting on him to fix their leadership problem before he dies. They trust him to seek God and find the right successor.
I wanted this page to have a dark palette and to have a crowd surrounding Samuel. He stands out in the spotlight all alone looking defeated with his eyes downcast and his expression grim. The people are angry as seen with their fists held high. They merge together in a dim, murky background.
Samuel will pray to God and will find out what to do in this difficult situation. We'll see that prayer on the next page so stay tuned!
