Once again, Samuel is praying to God. We watched him listening to God's voice as a child. We witnessed Samuel turning to God in every circumstance, and especially during hard times. Now he is seeking guidance on how to govern the people of Israel.
Samuel is portrayed on his knees in a posture of humility. He has separated himself from the crowd and their demands to be alone with God. He is looking up, respectfully asking for God's help. The colors are dark but not muted, showing that Samuel's hope that God to give him an answer to his dilemma.
I respect that throughout his life Samuel got alone with God, listened to His instructions, and followed them to the best of his abilities. That is a great example to us all.
God's response was to give the people what they wanted. However, having a king is not going to be as wonderful as they'd hoped. We'll more plainly understand God's warning as the story progresses.
